Father: Joseph Ormsby
Mother: Hannah Jolls
Date of Birth: 28 Apr 1765
Place of Birth: Warren
First Marriage: Unknown
Date of Death: Possibly Aug. 30, 1838
Place of Death: Possibly Orwell, Vt.
Children: Probable, being the only Ormsbees named in the 1850 and 1860 census of Ticonderoga and 1850 census of Town of Ausable, Clinton Co., N.Y.
Tradition says he came to Ticonderoga, N.Y. after the Rev. This seems very likely as 2 of his brothers settled at Moriah, N.Y. and were connected with the iron industry there, as was Oliver at Ticonderoga; 2 brothers settled in Vt., and the father, Joseph, also was at Moriah at his death. Both Ticonderoga and Moriah are in Essex County, N.Y.
A Oliver Ormsbee family listed in the 1810 and 1820 census
of Ticonderoga. (The only Ormsbees there)
In the 1810 census, he is listed as Oliver Ormsbee, blacksmith.
In the 1820 census, he is listed as Oliver Ormsbee, manufacturer.
There is considerable evidence that Oliver Ormsbee, in connection with his work with iron, traveled frequently from Ticonderoga to Orwell, Vt. which is just across Lake Champlain.
In Essex Co., N.Y. Court of Common Pleas. Q-3 dated Sept. 27, 1810 Plaintiff, Theron Catlin, complains that Aug. 1, 1810 at Ticonderoga, that Oliver Ormsbee owes him some $3000.00 most of which is for "large quantities of Iron and Steel" although promising has not paid any part.
In the same Court Q-5 dated Sept. 21, 1815, Plaintiff, Samuel Phillips, complains that on Sept. 1, 1812, Oliver Ormsbee at Orwell "beat him up til his life was despaired of"
In the Land Records of the Town of Shoreham, Vt. Book 7 a deed dated Apr. 18, 1826 made by Oliver Ormsbee of Orwell, Vt. to Alonzo Birchard.
The 1830 census of Orwell, Vt. lists an Oliver Ormsbee family there.
"Cemetery Records" of Orwell, Vt. p. 154 records
the death of a "Solomon" Ormsbee on Aug. 30, 1838 age
71, buried in Lake View Cemetery (this would make his birth 1767
which is very close to that of Oliver). NO where in this part
of the country is there any record of a "Solomon", or
any mention of an "Oliver" after this date, so it is
believed that this was the date of the death of Oliver Ormsbee
of Ticonderoga, N.Y. and Orwell, Vt.
