Article taken apparently from a Ludington, Mich. Newspaper in about 1924. This is an interview with Mrs. D.W. Allen. Much of the interview covers her memories of her early life at Greenfield, N.Y.
A Few Excerpts:
"Mrs. D.W. Allen, widow of the man who built the first grist
mill at Custer (Mason Co., Mich.), back in 1897, is living with
her daughter Mrs. George Parsons in Ludington, a shut-in, because
of lameness resulting from a broken hip sustained some years ago."
"Russell Ormsby, son of Isaac Ormsby, married Amy Williams, daughter of Theophilus and Chloe Williams, and they were the parents of Frances Ormsby, now Mrs. Frances Allen, the subject of this sketch."
The article carries the obituary, "published in the Greenfield, N.Y. paper" of her grandfather, Isaac Ormsbee, at the time of his death (1848).
The Obituary of Isaac Ormsbee.
"He was a native of Warren, R.I., where at the age of 17
he espoused the cause of his country by enlisting in the Rhode
Island line of the Revolutionary Army, and endured with it the
trials, hardships, and privations until the close of the American
struggle for freedom. He was present at, and shared in the perils
and triumphs of the capture of the British at Yorktown. To use
his own words, "the thunder of American Cannon made the earth
tremble and the British works to sink before them, while shots,
shells, and rockets, carnage and death were hourly visitants and
acquaintances""
"Fifty-two years ago, Captain Ormsbee settled in Greenfield, then almost a wilderness. About 40 years ago, he made a profession of his faith in Christ as the Redeemer and Saviour of men and joined the Baptist Church in which connection he died in full fellowship in the triumph of Christian faith. As a Christian, Patriot, husband and father and friend, he has left an example worthy of emulation."
