In the Village Cemetery at Orwell, Vt. there are two ornate
grave stones.
"Major Mason Ormsbee, died. Jan. 21, 1816 in the 35th year
of his age"
"To perpetuate the memory of, Mrs. Olivia, the partner of
J.H. Chittenden, who died at Keene, N.H. June 27, 1840 aged 55
yrs., former companion of Maj. Mason Ormsbee"

Estate of Mason Ormsbee filed Feb. 27, 1816. File #274 and in
Vols. 10 & 11.
Vol. 10 At a Probate Court held 29 Oct. 1816, it is shown that
at Orwell 21 Sept. 1816, for the year 1813, that James Ormsbee
and Mason Ormsbee, both of Orwell, entered into an agreement of
partnership to be known as "J.& M. Ormsbee."

Note: On the bottom of the index card some one has written,
"James Ormsbee, brother"
The listing of the estate includes, "Home farm consists of
156 acres, 2 dwelling houses. 2 barns, a store and shed situated
near the center meeting house in Orwell. A small piece of land
near James Ormsbee's dwelling. A share in the Center Meeting House
being, the wallpew next East of the pulpit on the North side of
said house."
The value of the whole estate is listed as $11,940. They set off
to Olivia, the widow, her 1/3 dower right or $3980.
Vol. 10 p. 142 "It appears that Olivia M. Ormsbee, a minor,
of about 4 years of age, has Olivia, the widow appointed as her
guardian."
Vol. 10 p. 501 In the claims against the estate are notes due
to; John Ormsbee, Sally Ormsbee, Thomas J. Ormsbee, a minor.
Vol. 11 p. 134 "Olivia Ormsbee, guardian of Olivia M. Ormsbee,
a minor, and daughter of Mason Ormsbee, late of Orwell, presented
her account of guardianship for the years 1818 and 1819."
Mason Ormsbee and John B. Catlin (his brother-in-law) were involved
in several proceedings in the Court of Common Pleas in Elizabethtown,
Essex Co., N.Y. in the years 1813 and 1814.
An old History of Orwell, Vt. says, "Mason Ormsbee was an early merchant."
Olivia Ormsbee married second Joseph Chittenden.

Joseph Hart Chittenden name is indicated as Joseph N. Chittenden in the Thomas Sanford Genealogy. He was twice married and had no children. He was a member of the Assembly and Colonel in the militia. (Source: Thomas Sanford Genealogy, c., 1911) Other records indicate that his name was Joseph Hart Chittenden and had a least one child, believed to be from his second marriage to Pamelia Brewer. Adoniram Hinman was born 6 Dec 1757 in Woodbury, Litchfield Co, CT. He died 23 Mar 1830 in Orwell, Addison Co, VT. Adoniram married Martha Barber, daughter of Matthew Barber and Hannah McFarland, on Mar 1780. Martha was born 1 Mar 1763 in Worcester, Worcester Co, MA. She died 3 Nov 1824 in Orwell, Addison Co, VT.
