"Capt. Charles James Ormsbee of the heroic 5th Vt. Regt.
died at the Battle of the Wilderness, May 5, 1864. He was Capt.
of Co. D, 5th Vermont Regt. He was buried near the battlefield
and his grave marked. His brother, E.J. Ormsbee going there to
recover his body without success. He was the 4th and youngest
son of John Mason and Mary Ormsbee. Born at Shoreham, Vt., Sept.
27, 1839. His ancestors on both his father's and mother's sides
were participators in the Revolution. He with two brothers, Capt.
E.J. Ormsbee, and John Mason, Jr. Ormsbee (now with a California
Regt. On service in New Mexico) answered the call in 1861. He
was promoted to Capt. of Co. D of the 5th Regt. of Vermont. The
last time he visited his father's residence near Brandon Village,
he was unmarried."
