Father: Joseph Ormsby
Mother: Hannah Jolls
Date of Birth: abt. 1777
Place of Birth: R.I.
First Marriage: About 1802/03, Achsah (Axie), VT
Date of Death: After 1850
Place of Death: Probably Indiana
Spouse: Achsah (Axie)
Date of Birth: About 1782
From the 1830 census of Shelby Co., Ind. Liberty Township p.
748, we can account for 9 children,
Head of Family:
Jeremiah Ormsby and wife, 2 males 10 to 14
2 fem. 10 to 14
1 fem. 14 to 19
Robert Ormsby and wife 1 fem.
Rufus Ormsby and wife no children
From the above it seems Rosamond was married before 1830, and out of the family. Norman John must have died very young, no further reocrds of him. Making a total of 9 children.
The first record of Jeremiah being in Shelby Co., Ind. is in Land Entries in the Tract Book of Shelby Co. where Jeremiah Ormsby in entered for 80 acres Sept. 27, 1822. So from the birth date of Rose in 1812 at Ira, Vt. to 1822 the family must have been enroute and the last 4 children born along the way.
The last record of Jeremiah being in Shelby Co., Ind. is a deed dated Feb. 4, 1835 in Book F p. 474 when he sold out. Then in the "History of Fulton Co., Ind. (See "K") says, "In April 1835. Jeremiah Ormsbee came with his family and located on the Michigan Road - -"
The 1850 census of Richland Twp., Fulton Co., Ind. shows;
Jeremiah Ormsby age 73 b. R.I.
Axie " age 68 b. Vt.
The Indiana State Library, County Historical Dept. has 3 histories involving Fulton County. They are catalogued as "P", "B", "K".
From "B" History of Indiana by Essary Vol. 3 (1936)
"Speaking of early settlers of Richland Twp. During the years
1833-1834, came Michael Shore, William Hall, Stephen Cherry. In
1835 came Jeremiah Ormsbee. William Surguy in 1836."
"May 2, 1836 in Rochester, Robert Ormsbee was appointed road
supervisor and Jeremiah Ormsbee was appointed overseer of the
poor."
From "K". This is a combination Atlas map by A.L.
Kingman (1883) having extensive history and biographical sketches
and early records of the Township Board of Commissioners.
"In April 1835, Jeremiah Ormsbee came with his family and
located on the Michigan Road, and during the same season came
Robert Ormsbee, a son of Jeremiah. David Shore came to the Twp.
(Richland) in 1835 and in the winter of that year married Susan,
daughter of Jeremiah Ormsbee. In the winter of 1836 or 1837, David
Shore taught school at the "Crossroad School House".
Board of Commissioner's meeting Apr. 11, 1836
"Jeremiah Ormsbee was appointed Inspector of Elections in
Richland Twp. until the annual Twp. elections." "Ordered
that the Sheriff of Fulton Co. cause elections to be held Apr.
25, 1836 at the house of Jeremiah Ormsbee in Richland Twp."
"Jeremiah Ormsbee was a grand juror and Robert H. Ormsbee
was a petit juror."
"Jeremiah L. Ormsbee was a private in Co. D 29th Regt. Ind.
Vols. 1861"
It appears that while Robert, son of Jeremiah Ormsbee, came to Fulton County with, or shortly after, his father, he must not have brought his family and settled there because he and his family are still in Shelby county in the 1850 census, and they do not appear in the later census of Fulton Co.
This Jeremiah is referred to in the probate of his brother, Thomas's estate, where he is mentioned as, "Jeremiah. of Ira, Rutland Co., Vt. Location now unknown", and again, "Jeremiah, "moved to a Western State" not located".
