During most of their married life, Ira Ormsby's wife Celia, taught in the schools at Buffalo, N.Y. In 1868, Ira had a wood yard in Buffalo, and an old letter dated Feb. 7, 1890 shows he was in the "Real Estate and Insurance Broker" business.
I remember Uncle Ira and Aunt Celia very well. They were my mother's Aunt and Uncle, so it was natural for me to call them Aunt and Uncle. When I was about 6 or 7 years old, and living with my grandparents in Hamburg, N.Y., Uncle Ira and Aunt Cel came out to Hamburg from Buffalo on Saturdays and gave dancing lessons in the Old Kopps Opera House. By "Special" invitation. I was obliged to attend some of these lessons.
Uncle Ira m. 2nd about 1900 Mary E. Hamilton a widow. She is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery at Orchard Park, N.Y. "1845 - 1937"
After his 2nd. m., Uncle Ira conducted a grocery business in Orchard Park until his death. I remember going with my grandparents from Hamburg, in a horse and buggy, to Orchard Park to visit Uncle Ira and Aunt Mary. Uncle Ira and Grandpa loved to sing, and during these visits there was usually a session of hymn singing. They also loved to tell stories of their early days, and the funny happenings of their old neighbors.
The obituary of Ira M. Ormsby is from an old newspaper clipping, the name of the paper is not indicated.
"Ira M. Ormsby, who died at Orchard Park, March 21, 1906, was born in Boston, Erie Co., N.Y. two miles West of West Falls in March 1838, and was the eldest son of the late Isaac Ormsby, who came to the Ormsby farm in 1827 from Saratoga County, N.Y. Mr. Ormsby married Celia M. Deuel of East Hamburg, and their only child, Frank R. Ormsby of Pittsburgh, Pa. survives him. He re-married Mary E. Hamilton, who with his brother, J. Albert Ormsby of Hamburg, also survives him. Mr. Ormsby was in business at Orchard Park nearly 40 years ago, then in Buffalo about 30 years, and for the last two and a half years at Orchard Park again. The deceased was buried from the Presbyterian Church at Orchard Park, where the funeral was largely attended by neighbors and friends, among whom he was widely known and respected."
