Subject: Ormsby/Armsbury
I'm sure we are related -- somehow! I am wondering if you are
knowledgeable
about the brothers who changed their name from ORMSBY to Armsbury
in the late
1700s. Here is what I believe (but have not proved) to be my direct
line (in
bold type):
It looks like Thomas ORMSBY (1644 or 45 to 1724) married Mary, lived in Salisbury, Mass. and had 11 children. Five sons and six daughters: EZRA (1686-1763), on 25 Dec. 1713 m. Mary Salabury/Salisbury (b. 15 Aug. 1686); Jeremiah (1672-unknown), m. Mehitibell; Thomas (1668-1724), m. Rebecca; Jacob (1680-1738), m. Hope; Daniel (1690-1766), m. Ruth; daughters were Mary, Rebecca, Juda, Hannah, Bethia, and Ester -- all born between 1670 and 1684.
It appears my lineage (bold & underlined) is from Ezra
and Mary ORMSBY who lived in Rehoboth, Mass and Barrington/Warren/Little
Compton, RI. Ezra's children were John (1733-1819), m. Sarah,
children: Joseph; Ebenezer; Zerviah; Mary; Phebe; Joshua; Ezra,
Jr.; James; and Daniel (1732-unknown).
On 19 Sep 1751 Daniel m. Martha Brownell at Little Compton, RI.
I'm not sure if these are all of their children -- but while living
in Petersburgh, NY they had: Thomas (1755-1827), m. Susannah;
JOHN (1752-1845), m. Priscilla Tompkins; and Olive (1754-unknown).
John and Thomas changed to Armsbury and/or Armsby prior to 1790.
John/Priscilla had 4 dau: Sally; Lucy; Polly; and Abigail (1789-?).
They had one son: Christopher T. ARMSBURY (1793-1853),
m. Polly. Of that union was born James (1825-1861); Jacob (1823-1852);
Hannah (1819-1851); Clark L. (1827-1911); Abraham (1816-1845);
Isaac T. ARMSBURY (1821-1859), m. in 1849 to Sally W. Peckham
(1822-1906). They had 5 children: Isaac Newton "Newt"
Armsbury, b. 13 Feb 1859 in Green Co., WI, d. 11 Mar 1943 in Lucas,
KS, on 7 Mar 1886 m. Rosena Susan Mason, b. Marshall Co., KS 1870,
d. 6 April 1963. Charles W. Armsbury; Clark L. Armsbury; Delia/Delilah
Armsbury (Mrs. D. E. Burr).
ISAAC NEWTON ARMSBURY AND ROSENA SUSAN MASON had 13 children. One died as an infant and the rest were all daughters except for two. Of those, one never married and the other only had daughters. I have names and some birth and/or death dates for these. My mother was IOLA NADINE ARMSBURY GROSS, the next to the youngest child of Grandpa Newt and Grandma Rosena. Most, if not all, of their married life was in Lucas and/or Luray, KS.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Praising God, Betty

Rehoboth isn't that close to Dartmouth, and according to Little Compton Families, Daniel was "of Dartmouth" at the time of the marriage. There are no births of this surname listed for Dartmouth, and the only death was that of Brownell Armsbury.
Dartmouth marriages include Olive to Stephen Cobb, her brother John to Priscilla Tompkins, the intentions of Daniel to Martha Brownell, a marriage of a Daniel to Elizabeth the widow of Judah Allen ("all of Dartmouth") in 1771, the marriage of Brownell to Sarah Mendall in 1791, and the marriage of Abraham of Seekonk to Cynthia Wordell of Dartmouth.
I have not been able to find any death information on the Daniel who married Ruth, the Daniel who married Martha, or Martha herself. Martha died after 3 Feb 1759 when her father made his will.
I have also not been able to find any information on a Daniel who married an Elizabeth, nor on Brownell - although from his name I suspect that he could have been the son of Daniel and Martha. Judging from his age at death, he would have been born about 1758. If it really was 1758 he should have been listed in his grandfathers will, but if he was born after 3 Feb 1759 that could explain why he was not listed.
The ONLY mentions of a Daniel Ormsbee in the NEHGR vol. 1-147
are:
Mary, the daughter of Daniel and Ruth married Thomas Redway.
Daniel S., son of Jesse and Hannah married Elizabeth Gray in 1822,
and
Daniel S married Ann Maria Dodge in 1834.
It would be very interesting to be able to see the probate records for Martha's father to see what distributions actually were made....
Part of me is wondering if maybe Martha died giving birth to
Brownell or shortly thereafter... Just another possibility <g>.

I find in my stuff from Fuller in England that Thomas (1645-1716) and wife Mary had a son Daniel (1690-1766) that married Ruth. Then I show that one of his brothers Ezra (1636-1763) and wife Mary had a son Daniel (1732-?) that married Martha. So there is a Daniel and his nephew Daniel.....

Olive was my great great great great grandmother.
She married Stephen Cobb, and they were the parents of Rev. Daniel Amesbury Cobb.
This Daniel married Mercy A. Lewis, and their daughter Sarah Jane married Robert Boyd. Their daughter Gertrude Sarah Boyd married Emerson Stephen Latham, and their daughter Alice May Latham married Elijah Andre Guyette. Their son Arthur Emerson Guyette married Lillian Eugenia Sherman, and I am their oldest child.
My birth name is Patricia Jean Guyette. My husband, Michael Henry Autry, Sr, (Mickey), is a cousin to Gene, but I sometimes have fun because I am a Jean.
I have two natural children, and one adopted, and my husband has two children. Together we have 11 grandchildren, scattered all over the nation, between the ages of 2 and 17.
After I retired a year and a half ago, we traded in our house and motorhome for a large motorhome, and have been traveling around the nation. Right now we are in Texas, a couple hours from Houston. We are not homeless, we just take our home with us as we travel, and tow a car to make getting to research areas easier. We have a permanent address, and the people there forward our mail to wherever we might be at the moment, and we have a cell phone so the kids can reach us if they need to.
I have been playing with genealogy for about 25 years, but since I retired I have been able to work on it a lot more than I ever could while I was involved with my professional duties. When we are somewhere with a phone line I spend a lot of time on the internet seeing what I can come up with, but I also have quite a few feet of books with us, and lots of reference CDs, so that I can do research even as we go down the road.
I am still looking for information to support that Ezra and Mary were the parents of the Daniel who married Martha Brownell, but the work the past couple of days has convinced me that unless Daniel was a bigamist then he couldn't be the son of Daniel and Ruth.
The end of this month I will be going to Houston for a few days and plan to spend some time at the genealogical library there. They have a complete collection of census films and indexes, and I hope to be able to find out more while I am there. A search of their online card catalog doesn't show much specific to either Dartmouth, Little Compton, or Petersburg, but the Census records might be able to shed some light on the situation. At least I will be able to get some details on when they went to NY, and just who went.
Tricia
