Civil War Veteran, Clarendon Native, Who Saw Lincoln Assassinated,
is 85
Ira G. Ormsbee, one of the oldest settlers of Flint, Michigan,
recently celebrated his 85th birthday at the home of his daughter
Mrs. George Havern. Mr. Ormsbee was
born in Clarendon on May 23,1844. He went to Flint by ox team
settling in that city when its population was only 1200 persons-
about three fourths of them Indian. He enlisted in Company C,
16th Michigan Infantry, in 1863, and served in the Northern Army
until the close of the war. He was on detached duty at Ford's
theater at the time President Lincoln was shot. Later he acted
as guard of honor in the capital while the dead president's body
lay in state and also was a guard of honor to escort the body
to the train en route to Springfield. The Civil war veteran is
an uncle of L.S.Glynn of this city, formerly of Clarendon.
