Batchelder Family

This family line is taken from the "Batchelder, Batcheller Genealogy" Descendants of Rev. Stephen Bachiller, of England, a leading Non-Conformist, who settled the Town of New Hampton, N.H.; and of Joseph, Henry, Joshua, and John Batchelder of Essex County, Mass. by Frederick Cliffton Pierce (1898). (1) Stephen Bachiller (Batchelder)

The book gives much of the history of Rev. Stephen in the various Towns of Mass. and a great deal about his eccentricities and troubles with various churches which he organized.

He was b. 1561 in England. About 1629 a colonizing company called "The Plow (Plough) Company" was organized in England to settle the so-called Plow Patent in Maine; and Mr. Bachiller, then 68 years old, was its pastor. He came to America in 1632 in the "William and Francis". The "Plow Company" failed and Mr. Bachiller formed a small church in Lynn, Mass. where he resided for a while, then in Hampton, N.H. and returned to England where he died in 1660 at Hackney, now a part of London.

He was the ancestor of the present day Batchelders, and I will detail the family from here using part from the book and part from records supplied by Mrs. Iona Palmer, a descendant, of Glens Falls, N.Y. This family lived for several generations in the Town of Fort Ann, Washington Co., N.Y. near the Village of West Ft. Ann. and many are buried in an old abandoned cemetery there.

Living when the book written (1898). Malvina F. Stevens was born 1-5-1818. They lived in Washington Co., N.Y. until 1848 when they moved to Hamilton Co., O. In the spring of 1850, they moved to Jasper Co., Iowa where he remained until May 1863 when he moved to Black Hawk, Clear Creek, Colo. For some years he was a resident of Boulder, Colo. where he is a farmer and fruit grower.
