Dear Maggie

This is one of those seldom but still "meaty" letters from the "tattle tale gray" sheep of the clan.
First inquiry is _____ your health? Good, I hope Mom said Dick was there in her last letter (dated Sept 2) or would be there, or something like that. Probabley by this time its all over but the shouting. I know he must of had a grand time and I also know without asking that you showed him all the sights. Bet the kids were thrilled. Dick is just like Cyde isnít he? You know Maggie, Clyde and I understand each other for the first time when I was called back 12 hours after I got home. I looked in in the eyes and saw more there than I had ever seen in all the years I knew him. So it goes. I have often wondered if Al has severed any of his fingers on the rotating saw he bought. Seems a long time since I saw you and will probable be much longer before I meet any one I know. This war seems to prevail as far intoo the past as I can remember and as far into the future as I can see. Never did know if Dad & Dorthy remarried. Cuban rum not obtainable. Rum not obtainable. Nothing obtainable! Wildest drink here is coffee. Puts goosepimples 14 feet above sea leavel on ya! With an without cream. Can't say much about myself but Iím well and gripping like hell. Hope you, Al, and most of all Harriet & Scott are in the best of health. God bless you all

Love
Jack
P.S. Have you heard about the allies taking Kiska from the Japs?

Wed (Beer time)

Dear Hon,

We are having chili & beans for dinner, if nothing goes wrong. Scott's chocolate pie was more looks than taste, crust a bit tough, meringue went haywire, tough on top and eggs runny underneath but the filler was good. Harriet fixed breakfast for me yesterday. Something went wrong with the poached egg so it went in the sink. She hoped the coffee wasn't too strong. Turned out it hadn't even perked, came out the color of water.

Last night we were in a hurry to et to the game, so we went out for supper. Scott said the new place on North Sunseton the east side was just a hamburger and malt shop so we went there. Got inside and found it a regular cafe, meals $1.00 and up. Had a very good meal though.

Terrific crowd at the game - three times as many as I ever saw before. Voight Midgets won 8 to 5. Had them 8 to 1 until the seventh inning - then the knights had a 4 run rally.

Got a new glass double boiler at the store. How the hell long does it take frozen chili beans to melt down in a double boiler, no sign of loosening yet.

Went over to Terlys's after the game last night.

Surely, Henry VIII, or whoever invented the 4 poster bed, made his wives sleep on the floor underneath, and he stretched out all over the place. Seems like a good idea, and I may put it into practice when you get back.

Gene is coming over tonight, I guess. Scott will be home. I expect to go to the ball game if these chili beans ever get done.

No toothaches, so have been sleeping like a log. Making up for lost time.

Guess there isn't much more news, so will close for this time. If the chili isn't ready pretty soon we will have Gene here for dinner.

See you in 18 days.

Love and kisses

Al.

P.S. Tell Mom and Granny hello and don't confess everything to Fr. Monihan.

Bye Bye.
