The 1820 census of Vermont lists Samuel Ormsby in the Town of Pawlet with, 1 male under 10, 1 male over 45; 1 fm under 10, 1 fm 10/16, 1 fm 26/45.

Although we have not found any information on his wife or children we have come to some conclusions from information we have gathered. There was a Samuel b. 1773 in New London, CT (from a Bible record given to us). He lived in Pawlet, VT at the time of the 1820 US Census. He was married to a Rachel (Lewis) at that time. He had several children by Rachel and moved to Peru, NY between 1820 and 1830. We have records of some of the children's births in Pawlet. We also have some school records of Peru that indicate a Samuel had children in the schools there. The same Bible record lists all of his children by Rachel. My great-great grandfather was William D. Ormsby. He was also in Peru in 1830 and is listed as having children in the schools as well. He is buried in Wilmington, NY and we have records that show he was in Franklin Cty, NY in 1850 and in St. Lawrence Cty in 1860 and 70. We believe that he was the son of Samuel of 1773, but have no birth records to prove this. We can follow from him down to myself without any question. We have been trying since about 1990 to find some way of finding more on Samuel of 1740. We feel that both Samuels left CT about 1795 and went to Saratoga Cty, NY and that at least the younger Samuel went on to VT. Recently we found a record from the Rutland, VT Herald that a Samuel Ormsby filed for a divorce in 1812 from Caziah Shaw whom he had married in Galway, NY in 1797. This record does give us the exact date of their marriage and the name of the JP who married them. We have not been able to find any more details. We were hoping to find the actual record to see if any children were mentioned as we assume Wm. D. and maybe one girl made up their family.

Note: In the VRs of Pawlet, Vt., we find Jane, dau. of Samuel and Rachel Ormsby b. Feb. 26, 1815. From Peru, N.Y. VRs, we learn that Bradford Ormsby, of Peru, was b. Mar. 22, 1818 at Pawlet, Vt. but no parents given. This would indicate the possibility that Jane and Bradford Ormsby might be brother and sister.
