Searching for info on subjects true parents,Currently shown as
Jacob O. & Deborah Stone. We know that Jacob O. was m. to
Rachel Powel & that Deborah Stone was m. to a Joseph Ormsby/Ormsbee
at the time. M.P.Ormsby was m. to Marenda Butler 15 jan 1825 &
he d. in Greenville,Bond,IL in 1840. We feel that his parents
may be Jacob O. & Rachel Powel as They had son & dau David
& Julia who m. their spouses in Underhill,Vt in the 1820s.
David seems to be shown as moving to Bond,IL also. Any info is

My sister-Lou Sexsmith,traced some of Joseph O. & Deborah's
family & most of them moved to Canada. She has been in touch
with some of them but no one shows that Martin Powell Ormsby was
a son of Deborah S. & Jacob Ormsby. That is where our problem
lies. I guess we are still looking.
Thanks John
St. Lawrence County, N.Y. Revolutionary soldier, Joseph Ormsbee. I have his application for pension. His wife was Deborah Stone whom he married in the Town of Richmond, Cheshire Co., N.H. I have found no records of his descendants, but believe that at least two of his sons moved to Michigan about the 1840s.

The following is listed under Stone Family in the History of Jericho
(1763-1913).
THE STONE FAMILY.
By Anna F. Stone.
The Stone family of Guilford, Conn., came from England in 1639.
David Tolman Stone, b. in Guilford in 1769, was a descendant.
He m. in 1792 Thankful Smith, who d. in 1834. Three children were
b., surviving their parents: Hiram, b. 1794; Electa, b. 1796;
and Harvey, b. 1800. The father, David, cleared a large farm on
Lee River, living there till his second marriage, when he moved
to North Underhill, afterward to Westford, where he d. The sons,
Hiram and Harvey, settled on the divided farm, where they lived
for many years. At length Harvey moved with his large family to
Swanton, Hiram remaining on or near his early home till 1874,
when he d. Hiram's wife was Clarissa Church and they were parents
of seven children: Newell Dwight, Emeline, Ambrose Clark, Judson

his native town. He lived on Lee River and later upon a farm on
what has been known as Stone Hill near Jericho Center. He was
for twenty-seven years a deacon in the First Congregational Church
and a staunch supporter. Three years before his death, which occurred
in 1906, he went to Burlington to reside with his only son. He

Joseph Ormsby married Deborah Stone 17 Aug 1789 in Richmond,
Cheshire Co., NH. I suspect he may be the Joseph Ormsby who petitioned
the courts when he was age 17, to have Gideon Ormsby of Manchester
named his guardian. He stated he was born in nine partner, NY
(Dutchess Co.) lost his parents when young and did not remember
their names. He also was in the Rev. War from Richmond, NH. Gideon
Ormsby's sister Experience and her husband lived in
Richmond, NH.
Jacob Ormsby son of Gideon and Marcy Ormsby married Rachel Powel and they had 4 children recorded in the Manchester, VT town records. Jacob and Rachel lived on the "Powel farm" in Burlington, VT and then moved to Jericho, VT. Jacob's brother Jonathan married Rachel's sister Rhoda and they lived on the "Powel Farm" after Jacob and Rachel. Rachel is listed as head of household in the 1820 census of Chittendon Co. so Jacob died before then.

He is the Joseph who took Rev. Pension papers in the state of NY and said he had lived in various places including Ontario, but had lived in NY state for 17 years and did not list any family. I heard many years ago (about 18 years ago) from a woman whose husband was descended from Joseph Ormsby and Deborah Stone, she lived in Ontario and believe she said that Deborah had died there so am sure they had children. This woman was looking for Joseph's parents but I don't believe that will ever be determined. Unfortunately, at the time I had just begun to collect information about Gideon and Marcy (in fact had just found out that my great grandfather's father had been born in Vermont) so we didn't keep in touch. When I tried to find her later I could not find them again and the old address letter was returned. I did copy Joseph's pension papers and have researched Cheshire Co, NH oddly enough for my grandmother's family - Cass & Church- the people in Richmond, NH came from the Smithfield-Cumberland, RI where Gideon and Marcy were from. So about 150 years before my grandparents married (Ormsby mar Church) their 2 families were neighbors.

Well, I think that Jonathan who married Ruth Staples was Gideon's 1/2 brother. Although most people having this Jonathan die as a child, I haven't seen that record, have you? Jonathan and Ruth Staples were married in the same church as Experience & Dorothy--Gideon's sisters. Also, in the Cheshire County, NH probate records is the record of a Ruth Ormsby daughter of the late Jonathan Ormsby of Taunton, Mass requesting that her cousin Michael Barrus be named her guardian. Michael was the son of Gideon's sister Experience. It sounds to me as though this would be Jonathan Ormsby and Ruth Staples daughter but I don't find any records of her birth etc. only this record in the courthouse in Keene, NH. So it is only speculation, but I don't think Ruth Staples was the 3rd wife of Gideon's father. Could of course be really wrong!
OH, by the way, in the records of the Congregational church
of Rehoboth 1738 records the baptisms of "Rebecca the wife
of Jonathan Ormsby Jr, Oliver, Gideon, Experience, Dorothy ye
children." Someone else read the first child as Olivia but
I looked at the microfilm of the record and it could be either
but lean towards Oliver especially since I find no more records
for an
Olivia but do find records for Oliver Ormsby in Richmond, Cheshire
Co, NH. Of course the fact that Jonathan the child of Jonathan's
first wife is not recorded with the family of Rebecca argues that
Jonathan the child of that union has died by 1738. Ah me.
No one seems to know who Martin Powel Ormsby's parents were
but I think they were Jacob Ormsby and Rachel Powel. Jacob's brother
Jonathan married Rhoda Powel, Rachel's sister and the name Martin
Powel Ormsby comes down in our line, but I can only find one proven
son and one probable of Jonathan and Rhoda..Gideon and another
named Hiram who shows up in a family bible. Hiram moved to Indiana
and died there leaving a widow with 3 small children among them
a son named Martin Ormsby who died in the battle of Shiloh in
the civil
war. the other 2 children of Hiram were girls..Mary Ann and Helen.
Hiram's death is noted in the family bible of the Gideon who I
believe was his brother.
David, a known son of Rachel and Jacob (marriage record in Chittendon county, VT names his parents) also lived in the same area of Illinois as Martin Powel Ormsby which is another reason think that he was Jacob and Rachels son. Unless, we find a family bible or some other proof though I think it will always be conjecture.
I have not really looked for the records of Jonathan Ormsby in Taunton, Mass records. But since your question will try to look for the records there. The problem with Taunton is that you either have to hire research done or go and do it yourself. They will not make copies with letter request.

Are you interested in the various land deeds that cover the "old Powel farm" on the Onion River (now Winooski River) in Burlington, VTor is that pretty far down the food chain for you. Jonathan son of Maj Gideon was killed in 1808 by a smuggler and there are various deeds signed by Jonathan & Jacob's brother Daniel, Jacob, Rachel and Jonathan's son in law Timothy Moultrip and his wife Rhoda and son Gideon in 1814. The land records I have found are incomplete in that tracing the reasons for all the signatures on the various deeds for this farm is difficult to sort out. Gideon and his wife, his widowed mother Rhoda and his sister Polly and her husband Timothy Mouthrip all went to Geauga Co., Ohio after 1814 and before 1820. In the 1820 census of Ashtabula Co., Ohio which is nex to Geauga Co. was an M.P.Ormsby. Have often wondered if this was Martin Powel Ormsby and if he made the trek with his cousins and aunt but settled one county over before going to Bond Co., Illinois.
Years ago I had correspondence with an Adams who was also descended
from John and Susannah. When I entered my genie info so many years
ago I did not enter the children except for Sarah who married
Abraham Bliss..(these 2 are my husbands ancestors.) So have Sarah
married Abraham Bliss, John married Susannah, Joshua married Mehitable,
Mary married Israel Sabin, Jonathan (mine) married Mercy Abbe,
Martha married James Franklin & Joseph married Abigail Abbe.
No spouses for the other siblings of John, Sarah and Jonathan.
Since that time I have found that families usually moved with
relatives --either in laws, cousin, aunts/uncles as well as brothers,
sisters or parents. So having to go back and research the collateral
lines now.
By the way, I don't think any of the English people others are assigning as Richard's parents have been proven. If you have more information about these would appreciate it.
