I am interested in any information on Luther and Sally (Staples) Ormsby. I know that they had at least one son, Luther. Did they have any additional children, if so, who. Both Luther and Sally were born in CT. Sally was last known to be in Howard, Steuben County, NY in 1850 and probably died there. Luther was last known to be in the same place in 1860 living with his son Luther, and probably died there too.

Dec 1840 IL; Mary Jane b. abt 1842 IL; and Albert T b. abt 1845 IL. Florian married Margaret Brown in NY and died in the civil war. Ornan married Clema ? and Helen Mae Hall; Mary Jane married Elijah Cone; Albert married Mary E Lamb. The family is known to have been in NY>IL>NY, settling in the counties of Steuben and Tompkins.

New York Census
1830 Luther Ormsby, Broome County NY, Township Colesville
1850 Luther Ormsby, Steuben County NY, Township Howard
1860 Luther Ormsby, Steuben County NY, Township Howard

Very little is known of Luther Ormsby, Jr. He is shown in the 1855 and 1860 census for Steuben County, New York. His wife, Margaret, is apparently his second wife since she was only 24 years old in 1855, and Luther's children (Oman & Albert) are listed as 14 and 9. No information can be found as to the name of his first wife. The same 1855 census shows that Luther, Jr. was born in Otsego County, New York; Margaret was born in Pennsylvania; the two sons were born in Illinois. He is listed as a farmer. As of this writing I have no idea where any of the four are buried.

Brown family
Posted by Sharon Jones on Sun, 09 May 1999

I am looking for information on the David Brown family which settled in Groton by 1850. He was born in CT in 1776 and married three times. He had several children. One daughter, Margaret married Luther Ormsby in Howard, NY abt 1853. Another daughter Lydia Ellen married James Williams in Groton, NY. A third daughter Betsey Maria married a Bills and later a Benedict. Two other daughters married Mortons. Have lots of family info on these families and would like to share.

Would also like information on the Joshua Brown family of Lansing, NY. Family resided there 1860-1880. Daughter Margaret married Florian Ormsby abt 1861-2. He was killed in Civil war and Margaret never remarried.
