Additional Facts:

There is no Vital Record of the birth of this Gideon, but he is strongly believe him to be a son of Jonathan for the following reasons:

Pages of an Old Bible from Mrs. Katherine Green of "Bonnie Oaks", Portage, Wis., a descendant of a Gideon Ormsby whose birth is recorded in the Bible as; "March 26, 1793 in the Town of Manchester, Bennington County, Vt." The Bible shows his wife born in the Town of Jerico, Chittenden Co., Vt., near Burlington.

"Died, in Concord, on May the 26th (16th in the Bible) 1842, Mrs. Rhoda Cunningham, widow of Deacon John Cunningham, late of Madison, deceased, in the 80th year of her age."
"Her life, for more than 50 years, was that of an humble Christian, and was beloved by all her acquaintances. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."

Note: That the last child of record born to Jonathan and Rhoda is in 1788, there being no males up to this time. In the 1800 census of Vermont, Town of Burlington, Jonathan Ormsby is listed with 2 males under 10, one of which could be Gideon.

Jonathan's wife was Rhoda. In the old Bible is recorded the death of "Rhoda Cunningham on May 16, 1842 in the 80th year of her age, in the Township of Concord, Lake County, Ohio" This would indicate her birth about 1763, about the right age to be the mother of Gideon. Jonathan, the father, was killed near Burlington, Vt. in 1808, so it is quite possible the name Cunningham could be from a second marriage.

By elimination this Gideon must be a son of Jonathan for: Jonathan's brothers, Daniel and Jacob both have named children definitely born in 1793, and his brother Gideon, born 1774, would be only 19 yrs. old in 1793, which seems too young to have a son born by then.

"A notorious smuggling boat, in the time of the embargo of 1808, was called the "Black Snake". It's seizure resulted in the murder of Elias Drake, Jonathan Ormsby, and Asa Marsh."

In the book, "The Winooski" by Ralph N. Hill. He has an interesting account of several pages on the Black Snake incident; (Aug. 3, 1808) "Capt. Jonathan Ormsby, a farmer whom the shooting had drawn to the scene, fell grievously wounded."

So this establishes very close to the time of Jonathan's death.
