Died at San Diagonia, Lower California, on the 7th of April last,
of
the mountain fever, terminating in dysentery, Wm. Barry Mather,
aged 18 years, formerly of Adrian in this State, but more recently
of Cincinnati, Ohio. The deceased was endeared by uncommonly strong
ties of friendship to a large circle of acquaintances -- the zealous
promoter of all the benevolent objects of the day -- a member
of the Presbyterian Church, and the only child and idol of Mrs.
E. Ross, Cincinnati. He left that city in the spring of 1849 in
company of his uncle, C.N. Ormsby, and others of that place, for
California by the overland route. The letter from Dr. Ormsby containing
the above sad intelligence, dated Los Angeles, April 2nd represented
himself as in good health, but depressed in spirits in consequence
of fatigue and anxiety.
