Cyrenus enlisted in the Union Army on September 14, 1861 at Westville, NY. He was in Company G, 64th Infantry, Cattaraugus Regiment; was wounded at the battle of Fredericksburg and was captured during that battle. He was confied at the notorious Libby prison, but was released near the end of the war.
