Daniel Orson Ormsby was one of the early settlers of Alfred, NY area. He came from Beckett, MA in the spring of 1839. He came from a long line of pioneers. He was a direct descendent of Sir Richard de Ormesby (one of William the Conqueror's knights) who took part in the Norman Invasion of England in 1066.

Daniel was a descendent of another pioneer, Richard Ormsby (our immigrant ancestor), who came to America on the Abigail in the spring of 1628 and settled on the York River at Saco, ME. Daniel was born on January 20, 1819 in Beckett, MA. He was the only son of Daniel D. and Anna Alinda (Snow) Ormsby. Both of Daniel's parents passed away before Daniel reached the age of 14. After his father's death in 1832, he lived with his grandparents, Elijah and Elizabeth Ormsby.

In October of 1832, Elijah filed a pension application under the Act of Congress that was passed on June 7, 1832 which outlined certain benefits that were available to those men who had served in the miltia during the American Revolution. Based on his service during the war, Elijah Ormsby received substantial benefits in the form of government land grants which were passed on to his surviving children and grandchildren when he passed away on June 8, 1834. Daniel Orson's share was 75 acres of land on the Vandemark, a strip of government land in Allegany County, NY.

When Daniel arrived in the Alfred area in 1839, he built a one room log cabin on that 75 acres in East Valley, five miles from Alfred.

On March 18, 1840, in Hornellsville, NY, Daniel married Sarah Diana Satterlee (born October 21, 1822), the daughter of David and Cynthia Satterlee. (The Satterlee's were direct descendents of Sir Edmond de Satterlee of Devonshire, England (circa 1200)) whose descendents emigrated to New London, CT in 1688.

David Satterlee moved to Alfred Center in 1813. He was a native of Broadalbin, CT. He came to Alfred with his family in February, 1813 and purchased 50 acres of Lot #7 from Nathan Green and erected a log cabin on the land. The following year, he purchased another 50 acres. After Daniel and Sarah were married, they built their homestead near the log cabin that Daniel erected the year before.

Daniel and Sarah were members of the Second Seventh Day Baptist Church. This second house of worship was completed in 1855 and it was located in Alfred Centre. David Satterlee (Sarah's father) often preached at this church.

In a subsequent email, Stephen Ormsby relayed to following:

No one knows exactly wht prompted Daniel Orson to enlist in the Union Army. Perhaps the death of his eldest son and the imprisonment of his other son influenced his enlistment on March 30, 1864 at Ward, NY. Daniel was in Company B., 179th Infantry; was wounded at the Battle of Petersburg on June 17, 1864 and was transported to the U.S. Army hospital at Annapolis, MD where he passed away on June 24, 1864.

He was born in Beckett, Massachusetts. His mother died when he was 6 and his father died when he was 13. He lived with his Ormsby grandparents after they died. in 1839 hewent to Alfred, New York to live and farm on land that his grandfather got through his service in The American Revolution. He married Sarah Satterlee and they had ten or more children. He was a Justice of the Peace at one time. His oldest son died in The Civil War at Gettysburg and his second son was wounded at Fredericksburg and was taken prisoner at Chancellorsville to Libby Prison. Shortly thereafter Daniel enlisted. He was wounded in the first days of The Siege of Petersburg and died a few weeks later.
