"Levi Strong Backus, born June 23, 1803, deaf and dumb. , married Jan. 4, 1829 Anna Raymond Ormsby. She was born Sept. 8, 1809, daughter of Daniel and Hannah (Raymond) Ormsby. She was a deaf mute and one of the pupils of Levi. She resides (1870) at Sprout Brook, near Cherry Valley, N.Y." Levi did a lot for deaf people, founded a weekly newspaper for them. He died May 17, 1869 aged 65 at Montgomery, N.Y.
