A.S. Ormsby arrived home, Tuesday, from a three weeks business trip in Nebraska.

From the Palo Alto Reporter April 4, 1901:
L.T. Graves left on Monday for an extended trip through South Dakota and Nebraska for A.S. Ormsby.

From: A. Scott Ormsby, grandson; Grandfather purchased a large home in California from Thadeous Lowe, he was a Balloonist in the Civil War. Grandmother sold it to Pancho Barnes. (The grandfather spoken of here is Alvin Scott Ormsby. The grandmother spoken of here was Grace Pullen Ormsby. Here's the story as I remember it. My grand father bought a house in South Pasadena from the family of Thaddeus Lowe. Lowe was a balloonist during the civil war. After the war he settled in Pasadena and built a huge mansion. At sometime he, or his son, built the house in South Pasadena (or maybe called San Marino). It was a big house - 32 rooms - and had a stable that grandfather turned into a 16 car garage. When I was a kid the family drove by it many times and dad explained that it was the house he grew up in. That of course was mind boggling to me......we were living in the little house in Temple City. The address was 1350 South Garfield Avenue. My grandparents would have lived there from around 1910 until maybe the early 30s. The story went on that at sometime, either when my grandparents were divorced or my grandmother died, the house was sold back to Pancho Barnes and she remodeled it into a Spanish villa.

House in Pasadena
Thaddeus Lowe born in 1832 in Jefferson Mills New Hampshire. Chemist and Civil War Balloonist. Considered the father of the United States Air Force.

Thaddeus Lowe Jr, the seventh child of Thaddeus Lowe and Leontine married Florence Mae Dobbins. Her father, Richard J. Dobbins, was a noted architect, the designer of the the official buildings of the 1876 Centennial. His wife was Caroline. They had two children: William Emmert and Florence Leontine.

Caroline Dobbins built her Daughter and Son-in-law a three-story, thirty-five-room mansion. It featured eighteen-foot ceilings, English wood paneling, hand-carved moldings, and a massive crystal chandelier. A harpsichord chime called the family to meals. Upstairs, the baths were marble and the spigots were silver. Outside, a spacious patio surrounded a circular pool dotted with water lilies. The estate had tennis courts, stables, and a three-quarter-mile exercise riding ring. It was located on south Garfield Avenue in San Marino. The mansion was built about 1903 (When Florence Leontine, born July 22, 1901, was two.)

The reference does not indicate this home had ever left the control of the Lowe family. However, Ormsby family records have the home in the possession of Alvin Scott and Grace Ormsby between the time frame of 1910 to 1927/28. Grace is believed to have died in 1928. It is believed the house was sold to Poncho Barnes (Florence L. Lowe) in 1927.

In March of 1927, Florence arranged to have her parentsí San Marino mansion redecorated in Spanish style. The newly refurbished home featured a dramatic entryway, flagstoned floors, and ceilings with handcarved hardwood beams. In the enormous dining room stood and antique Spanish refectory table thirty feet long. In the foyer, there were tow Spanish saddles detailed in sterling silver. It was one of the showplaces of Southern California.

The last mention of the house in this reference is: Feb 1935 Poncho rented the place for the summer to Jack Maddux, an airline owner.

Alvin Scott married a second time Helen Warren. After the death of Alvin Scott, Helen went to stay with her sister in Ohio.
