Almond Ormsby was born 10 Mar 1788, probably in Canaan, in the northwest corner of Connecticut, some 60 miles south-southeast of Schenectady, New York. Anna Margaret Bell was born a year later (she was baptized 9 Mar 1789) in St Johnsville, New York, about 45 miles west-northwest of Schenectady. It is likely that Almond and Anna were married in the St Johnsville area, perhaps about 1810, as a son, Sherman Ormsby, was born 5 Jun 1817 in Herkimer, New York, only 15 miles west of St Johnsville.

Almond Ormsby, birth date 180?

Census of pensioners for Rev. military serivces. Washington, DC. 1841. Almon Ormsby, born 1749, New York

Possible: Almon Ormsby had another son, this second son is possible the father of Almon F. Ormsby (born 1844, served in the Civil War) and Judith Smith Ormsby. Found a Johnda Ormsby, born about 1847 in Waupaca, Waupaca, WI, who married Chester Gurley (born about 1843) about 1863. They had Maggie Martha Gurley. This may be a daughter of an unknown son of Almon, Amos' son.

Almon Ormsby has been listed by our family researchers as Almond. Almon seems more likely. He married Anna Margaret Bell. They had a son Sherman Ormsby, b. 5 June 1817 in Herkimer, New York. He married Esther Nichols in 1860 in Farmington, Wisconsin. Their daughter Ellen Elizabeth Ormsby was my grandmother.

Newspaper obituaries list both 5 May 1817 and a date in June 1817, with the latter overwritten to indicate 14 or 19 June 1817. They also indicate merely that he was born in Herkimer County, New York, not giving a town name.

Sherman was born in May or June, 1817, in Herkimer County, New York, and "grew to manhood there." In 1848 he moved to Farmington, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. He married Esther Nichols there on 27 August 1860. Two daughters were born to them in Wisconsin. In 1884, Sherman took his wife and younger daughter to South Dakota, where they resided with their daughter and son-in-law, Ellen Elizabeth (Ormsby) Aspinwall and Ashley M. Aspinwall. An article in a Jefferson County, Wisconsin, newspaper, dated about 1892, stated that Sherman "owns forty acres of Dakota dirt." Sherman died during the evening of Tuesday, 4 May 1897, and his funeral was at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, 6 May, the Rev M. Norton officiating.
One obituary said the funeral was held "at the church," while another stated it was "held yesterday from the home near Manchester." Sherman was buried in Manchester cemetery. One obituary stated, "Mr. Ormsby has been a pioneer in two states and has done his share of work toward developing them."

Additional Facts:

Ashley was born and raised in Farmington, Wisconsin, where he married and had three sons. In the spring of 1884 he moved his family moved to Manchester, South Dakota, where they lived for 18 years and where another six sons, and finally a daughter, were born. Ellen Ormsby Aspinwall's parents and younger sister accompanied them from Farmington and lived with them in South Dakota, although Sherman Ormsby owned his own "forty acres of Dakota dirt."
Many family members believe Ashley's middle name was Marion, but birth records of some of his children born in South Dakota give his middle name as Murry or Murray. Ashley and his family left South Dakota for Oregon on Tuesday, 18 March 1902, arriving on Friday, 21 March 1902, and settled in Brooks, Oregon. "The fruit trees are in bloom, gardens up, and grass large enough to mow." Daughter Helen was born there a year later. Ashley Aspinwall died of bladder cancer in 1908. He had surgery in St Vincent's hospital, but, unexpectedly, didn't recover.

My Great Great Grandparents were Delatus Miles Aspinwall and Lovina Armanda Bates, parents of Ashley Aspinwall, and his sister (I assume) --- my Great Grandmother, Ellen Lucelia Aspinwall. She "begat" Benjamin Howard Lounsbury, my Grandfather. I have a picture (attached), labeled on the back, Ashely (sic) Aspinwall; no other information.
